The Data File Import Utility (DFIU) is a Web-based program that allows for importing inventory data into the application database from external source files that meet certain criteria. In addition to updating fields to existing part numbers in the database, new part numbers can be added with all new part attributes including new Line Codes and PN Codes.

In many cases, these data files are provided by suppliers and sent directly to the PartsWatch support group. Although there may be certain instances where data formats in their original, unedited state are outside the ability of this program to handle, this utility is sufficiently capable, along with some minor cleanup of the files, to provide PartsWatch users with an extremely useful tool that handles the vast majority of import requirements.

To aid in the cleanup of the files, a text editor and Microsoft Excel must be installed on the client PC.

The general file types that can be converted are CSV files, and Tab and Pipe (|) delimited text files.

The method for import is simple. From a browser, such as Internet Explorer, enter the URL for access to this function. After logging on to the utility and providing the necessary password on the LOGIN screen, data files for import can be found by browsing on the client PC. These files are mapped based on defining what data is in what position and subsequently loaded to the application database. The mapping for any particular file can also be saved so that if this data is imported on a repetitive basis, there is no need to remap each time it is imported. In the course of applying this data to the database, if the program encounters unexpected errors, such as inconsistent data fields, they are reported and the process stops.

DFIU must be configured, and the necessary URL and Login information must be pointed to the specific database before the utility can be executed.

ALERT: Any data imported to the database affects the data immediately.

There is no recovery for data that is inadvertently imported.

Technical Note: The following database tables are updated using this utility: MFG, PNCODES, PARTS, PARTSORT, UPC, CATSUBASC, PARTSLINK, INVS, PARTSAUDIT, SUP and MFG (all either insert or update).
