The INVENTORY POPULARITY AND RANKING utility is used to rank parts per Line Code by sales quantities or sales dollar values from the most to the least popular and to update the 'SALES CLASS' code in the part table in order to identify how frequently parts are turned over in the store.

For example, Sales Class Popularity Codes are used:

  • To filter parts for inventory reporting.

  • To set up customer pricing so that high sale items are discounted and slower movers are priced slightly higher to increase the margin.

  • In conjunction with Velocity Pricing in order to add a percentage depending on how parts are ranked.

  • With purchasing to limit the parts ordered to fast movers only or to return just slow movers.

Prior to running the INVENTORY POPULARITY AND RANKING utility, setup must be completed on the POP CODES / ORD PROTECT screen, and optionally per Line Code in the Popularity Codes section on the LINE CODE RANK SPECIFICS screen.

Even though 'SALES CLASS' codes can be set up per part as any value on the MAIN PART ENTRY screen, only the Popularity Codes set up on the POP CODES / ORD PROTECT screen are used for the ranking.

When set up, Popularity codes are available on the LINE CODE RANK SPECIFICS screen so that each line can be setup with only the class codes used by that line; and if not set per line, then the system level setup is used. Setup per line code also allows ranking to be run by dollar value or by units sold.

To run the INVENTORY POPULARITY AND RANKING utility:

  • Select a 'LINE' and if ranking has not be set up on the 'LINE CODE' entered, the system prompts that the Popularity Codes set up on the POP CODES / ORD PROTECT screen will be used.

  • Optionally filter the parts by 'START PART NO' / 'END PART NO' range or by Search Limits, e.g. 'PN GROUP', part create ‘WITH DATE’, 'DEPARTMENT', 'CATEGORY' filters and/or 'WITH SALES' greater than, less than, or equal to a certain amount.

  • Click 'SET PERIODS', and depending on how often the ranking is run, select the relevant time periods from the pop-up (current month, current year, this year and or last year). As checked, each Sales Period will display with the 'Fiscal Year' and 'Beginning Dates' and 'Ending Dates'. Click the 'SET ALL' button or check each period to include it in the ranking and click ‘OK’ to continue.

The system fills in the 'Sales Period Selection' and the 'Current Ranking Information' sections.

  • If the STORE SCHEDULE is set up, the number of days the store is open displays in the 'Sales Period Selection' and if not, the number of calendar days in the period displays but can be edited under 'SELL DAYS'.

  • If the 'SALES CLASS' codes are setup on the LINE CODE RANK SPECIFICS screen they display under the 'Current Ranking Information'. If not, the system defaults will display. The current 'SALES CLASS' code from the 1st position in the field in the part table displays under 'CURRENT RANK' and can be edited. If edited, this new value will move to the 2nd sales class code position when the ranking is updated to the part table instead of the one currently stored in the 1st position. The 'WEIGHT' percent can also be edited under 'NEW WEIGHT', but must represent 100%.

  • Once the parameters are set up:

    • Check the 'CURRENT RANKING REPORT' to see the setups used for the ranking and click 'PREVIEW' or 'PRINT'.

  • Check the 'CURRENT SALES REPORT' to output the results of the ranking and click 'PREVIEW' or 'PRINT'.

  • 'CURRENT SALES REPORT' output by units sold (the 'RANK BY DOLLARS' setting on the LINE CODE RANK SPECIFICS screen unchecked).

  • 'CURRENT SALES REPORT' output by dollar value (the 'RANK BY DOLLARS' setting on the LINE CODE RANK SPECIFICS screen checked).

  • Click the 'UPDATE' button to move the 'SALES CLASS' values from the ranking to the part table per ranked part. Click 'OK' when the prompt opens:

  • The 'SALES CLASS' field on the MAIN PART ENTRY screen has 2 positions that allow 1 alpha, numeric or special character each.

  • Each time the ranking utility is run the popularity codes are stored in the 1st position of the 'SALES CLASS' code field and the value in the 1st position is moved to the 2nd position; and since the ranking is based on the sales histories, two consecutive rankings makes it easy to see whether or not there is any change in how well the parts are selling.
